The following is news from the Office of Congressman Michael San Nicolas:
$479,000 COVID-19 federal funds made available
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today, in the early evening of March 16, 2020 eastern standard time, that Guam will be receiving $479,000 to support its COVID-19 response and preparedness activities.
This award was provided through the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020 (passed in the House as H.R. 6074 and became Public Law 116-123). In this first emergency response package, Congress directed immediate access to $475,000,000 to support States, territories, and tribes to conduct public health activities. The Emergency Supplemental Act directed that each jurisdiction receives 90% (ninety percent) of their total FY2019 CDC award.
The $479,000 made available to Guam may be used for a variety of activities related to combatting COVID-19 including, but not limited to: epidemiology, surveillance, laboratory testing, case identification, monitoring of travelers, data management, emergency operations and coordination, risk communication, surge staffing, infection control, and the purchase of equipment, supplies, and shipping.
These funds may also be used to reimburse Guam for any costs associated with preparation and response to the virus outbreak incurred back to January 20, 2020.
“I appreciate Governor Leon Guerrero working expeditiously to ensure that our island receive this first round of funding made available through our efforts in Congress as I urged her to do the within minutes of the House passing H.R. 6074.” Congressman San Nicolas stated. “Further, more funding will soon be available, including the $7B in loan subsidies to small businesses who have been financially impacted by the outbreak.”
