Big earthquake rocks Japan; no tsunami alert for the Marianas

As of 7:26 p.m., Saturday, there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands, according to the National Weather Service Tsunami Warning Center.


"An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 occurred near the east coast of Honshu, Japan at 7:09 p.m. ChST," the tsunami warning statement read.


According to international news wires, a tsunami of up to 1 meter is expected to hit Miyagi Prefecture, where a nuclear reactor is located.
